Black Holes: Space Warps & Time Twists

On Exhibit June 21 - September 7, 2009

Making its debut at the Museum of Science, this exhibit offers visitors a chance to venture to the very edge of these mysterious celestial phenomena...and live to tell the tale.

Black holes are often fodder for science fiction, but the dire predictions astronomers and physicists make about their relentless, time-stopping gravitational pull are in fact inspired by Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity. The exhibit starts with some basic concepts of physics — explaining gravity, forces, and motion through hands-on demonstrations. The "Black Hole Modeling Lab" demonstrates how, when pushed to extreme conditions, gravity can warp space and time. In addition, visitors who have picked up their "Black Hole Explorers ID" can log their experiences at each station via barcode technology, opting to send themselves an email containing their findings and additional resources.

With the fundamentals in mind, visitors move on "In Search of Real Black Holes," using interactive stations that employ images and data from some of the world's most powerful telescopes to demonstrate evidence of black holes. Dare to take a "Black Hole Adventure," a simulated trip to the giant black hole at the center of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. It's easy to see how these strange phenomena raise as many questions as they answer, and why they have inspired science fiction writers for many years. Indulge your fantasies with "Black Holes in Popular Culture," reliving old favorites while exploring how stories affect our perception of black holes. See how informed your ideas become once you've taken your own journey to a black hole!

Black Holes: Space Warps & Time Twists is a production of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. The Black Holes exhibition is funded by a generous grant from the National Science Foundation with additional major support from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
